DNV partners with Siemens Energy’s global manufacturing business unit. The two companies joined forces to create a new quality assurance platform to be used by the 3D printing industry. According to the two companies, the new solution will help accelerate commercial additive manufacturing production with enhanced quality control.
Key information:
- DNV partners with Siemens Energy to create a new quality assurance platform.
- The new launch is set to target the 3D printing industry.
- According to its developers, the new platform combines technology from Siemens Energy’s AM Cockpit platform and DNV’s Independent Quality Monitor platform.
The new solution features technology from two already established platforms. Siemens Energy’s AM Cockpit platform, which provides automated, reliable quality control during the 3D metal printing process, will combine with DNV’s Independent Quality Monitor (IQM) platform, which is a customer portal that can provide continuous quality assurance for digital solutions.
The AM Cockpit works by collecting sensor data streams and powder bed images from the manufacturing process in powder bed fusion 3D printers. Then, it generates a digital summary of each printed part, highlighting problem areas. The IQM, developed as part of the EU-project InterQ, aims at zero-defect manufacturing. It works by monitoring data quality continuously through newly developed algorithms and compliance logic.
"Succeeding in AM industrialisation relies on a successful digital transition. The combination of the AM Cockpit and the IQM is a significant step forward for additive manufacturing," said Klas Bendrik, Chief Digital and Development Officer at DNV.
"The benefits of 3D-printing, when used properly, can include reduced material waste, quicker production, cost savings and the ability to produce complex and customised parts," added Stian Gurrik, Senior Engineer at DNV.
Through the combination of these two solutions, DNV hopes to provide a commercial solution for companies within the additive manufacturing (AM) industry. The quality assurance platform should allow users to compare 3D-printed parts with an approved master print. Additionally, it should also provide improved automation and the possibility of remote process certification.
Manish Kumar, Head of Business Development, Strategy, and Sales of Siemens Energy Additive Manufacturing Business added, "With decades of experience in industrialising additive manufacturing, Siemens Energy is an excellent partner for DNV in advancing quality assurance of additively manufactured parts.”
According to the developers, the printing process quality can be visualised with the digitalised quality assurance method of the AM Cockpit and the IQM.
