LK Metrology unveils latest measuring arms for inspection
The new FREEDOM Arms aim to capture multi-sensor data through its laser scanner and tactile probe.
LK Metrology has launched its latest generation of FREEDOM measuring arms. The new range features 6-axis and 7-axis measuring arms, replacing the old 34 original versions. The metrology service and solution provider’s new products are said to feature several new benefits compared to its predecessors.

The new range of products fall into three categories, FREEDOM Classic, FREEDOM Select, and FREEDOM Ultimate, with each range providing differing levels of measuring precision. LK Metrology claims that the arms feature probing accuracy that is certified to ISO 10360-12 and functionality guaranteed up to 40 degrees Celsius. Additionally, both arms claim to be easy to use, transport, and set up, as well as reliable.
The 6-axis FREEDOM Arm v2 in particular allegedly features complete IP54 protection against water splashes and dust, whilst also being able to conduct 3D tactile inspection and measurement in harsh industrial environments. Whereas the 7-axis edition claims to weigh only 10.5kg, and still can capture multi-sensor data although it does not have an IP54 rating.
New additional features include an OLED touch-screen display, providing the user with convenient fingertip control, whilst also allowing for increased inspection productivity with the user able to stand in the same place throughout the inspection process. Another new feature is the CP-B battery pack with an ethernet connection for both the probe and laser scanner, so they can connect to the internet where no Wi-Fi is present. The arms also feature hot-swap capabilities, with two rechargeable batteries provided to promote non-interrupted inspection.
LK Metrology claims that the arms do not require encoder referencing and system warm-up before every use. This is because the arms include incremental rotary encoders that feedback on the angular position of every joint to the control software. This supposedly leads to increased accuracy and productivity.
The metrology solution and service provider’s latest measuring arms are allegedly compatible with a variety of third-party inspection software applications, including:
- InnovMetric’s PolyWorks Inspector will allow the user to exchange programmes between portable and static coordinate measuring machine (CMM) platforms.
- Metrostaff’s ArcoCAD metrology software and Nikon Metrology’s Focus Inspection, are both for data analysis.
- QxSoft’s CMM Manager inspection package is for touch probing only.
Additional new releases include the new range of 21 stainless steel-tipped probes, which feature either a stainless steel or carbon fibre body. To ensure full IP54 protection, the probes claim to have a rubber seal around the mounting interface and protective caps cover the arm ODU connectors. The other new launch is v6.2 of the RDS software, which enables communication with the arm via Wi-Fi or USB. The software also features a warning to alert the user if the arm is not fully IP54 protected. Also, instead of using mains power, the new launches use a CP-W control pack with a Wi-Fi connection and battery power.
