Nikon Metrology has announced that Hyundai Motor North America has adopted one of its X-ray computed tomography (CT) systems. The solution has been installed at the company’s newly opened, $51.4 million Safety Test and Investigation Laboratory (STIL), located in Superior Township, MI.
According to its developers, the X-ray CT system boasts a large scanning volume, multi-source flexibility, and dual-detector functionality. The user will benefit from various enhancements that aim to provide high-quality inspection capabilities.
Hyundai Motor North America decided to install the system at its new facility to provide important analytical processes including the non-destructive inspection of components like air bag inflators, lock mechanisms, seat switches, struts, impellers and additive parts.
Additionally, Hyundai will utilise its new solution to help ensure the quality, safety and functionality levels of its components for automobiles. The X-ray CT system's measurements claim to be fast, efficient, and accurate whilst being conducted in a non-destructive manner. By conducting non-destructive inspections, Hyundai’s employees will benefit from improved safety levels whilst analysing charge devices like airbag inflators.
“Having the on-site capabilities to view the inner structures and components of materials and mechanisms through the advanced Nikon X-ray CT system provides Hyundai with detailed data points that would otherwise take weeks to evaluate,” said Ben Michajlyszyn, Director of the Safety Test and Investigation Laboratory at Hyundai Motor North America.
Chris Peitsch, Global Sales Manager at Nikon Metrology, added “The multi-tube, multi-detector configuration delivers a highly flexible system capable of producing top-quality results on small, low-density components such as impellers as well as on larger, multi-material assemblies such as airbag inflators. This flexibility to do more on a single system can yield a greater ROI and the ability to adapt to Hyundai’s needs as their business and inspection requirements advance.”
